Agony consumed Vounée. Everything hurt. Then she opened her eyes. She saw again. Felt. Heard. She sucked in a breath. Most of her body lay inert, but the green bathed her. The light of Life mended her. She let out a shuddering breath.

Something warm and hot washed against her hair. She turned her head to see Lady Iith’jau lying staring at her. The dragoness had collapsed. Blood spilled from horrible rents down her neck. The collar . . .

Was gone.

Blood gleamed on the claws of her left forepaw.

“You freed yourself,” Vounée whimpered as more and more of her body returned to her. It spread down her torso and now worked down her arms.

“Yes,” wheezed Lady Iith’jau.

Vounée struggled to sit up but collapsed and screamed. Her forearms were still heavy stone. Her legs rock below the knees. The light of her amulet winked out. She slammed her head into the dirty, agonizing black washing across her vision. Tears spilled from the corners of her eyes.

She was crippled. She could do nothing but lie here and sob in pain while Lady Iith’jau died beside her. Her screams filled the woods. If she couldn’t move her arms, she couldn’t cast the Life magic. She couldn’t save her mother’s life.

“Don’t die,” Vounée cried. “Please, please, don’t die. Don’t leave me!”
